The Eugene Field Memorial was unveiled October 9th, 1922 in Chicago's Lincoln Park. Eugene Field (1850-1895) is remembered for his love of children and the poems he wrote such as "Little Boy Blue" and "Wynken, Blynken and Nod". This design combines a winged fairy hovering over a pair of sleeping children.
The idea was inspired by Field's poem "Rock-a-by-Lady". Other poems are illustrated on the architectural base (pictured below).
Nearly half the cost for the memorial was raised by Chicago Children's Contributions and aided by the Benj. F. Ferguson Fund. McCartan was awarded the Gold Medal of Honor from the Architectural League of New York for this monument.
